Recognition Goes a Long Way

sticker-01Did you know that approximately 7 out of 10 workers in the U.S. feed “undervalued” by their employer? This is a shocking statistic that should serve as a real eye-opener for companies across the country. When there’s a general lack of appreciation in the workplace, employees are more likely to quit their job, reduce their productivity, possess a negative attitude, and even suffer from work-related accidents.

Why Recognition Is Important

The backbone of any successful company is a strong, dedicated workforce. Without them, companies would implode and fall into the abyss where others have failed before them. Far too many employers take the wrong approach to managing their workers, ruling with a sense of negativity. This typically results in a disgruntled workforce while creating a sense of disconnect between employees and employers.

The solution to this problem isn’t higher pay (although this helps). It’s taking the time to recognize employees and show them thanks for everything they’ve done. A little recognition goes a long way in the workplace, as it encourages a positive working environment while acknowledging the importance of each and every employee. Contrary to what some people may believe, employees seek professional recognition from their employer, not higher pay or extra ‘perks.’

Ways To Recognize Employees:

  • Send out personalized email messages, thanking each employees for something they’ve done or accomplished while working at the company.
  • Hold a rewards ceremony where employees are given personalized trophies or plaques for various accomplishments.
  • Use social media, such as Facebook or Twitter, to recognize employees.
  • Stop and verbally thank your employees when you see them.
  • Recognize your employees’ birthdays.
  • Mark your calender for Employee Appreciation Day on March 7.
  • Create personalized “thank you” notes for employees.

Employee recognition isn’t something that has to cost a fortune. Sure, you can offer bonus checks to hard-working employees – which they are sure to appreciate – but a more meaningful approach is to acknowledge their dedication through one of them methods mentioned above. Handing out an employee a personalized trophy, for instance, is a quick and easy way to tell them thanks for everything they’ve done. And unlike a bonus check, they will always have the trophy to look back on and remember their accomplishments.
